Get the Boat Ready
As we move into the wonderful summer months in Northern Michigan, it is time to get the boat ready. Sitting in storage all winter long might take its toll on your boat and its equipment. It is very important to make sure to inspect your boat prior to your first outing.
Create a checklist to make sure all required safety features for a boat or personal watercraft (PWC) are in working order on your vessel. A refresher on boating safety is a great idea as well. An easy to read handbook is available on line. Make note of the many requirements and regulations for PWCs.
Inspect fuel tanks, hoses and filters etc. to ensure there are no leaks. Check tire pressure in trailer tires. Working lights are also a requirement of the law should you be boating after sunset. Do you have red port, green starboard sidelights and a stern or all around white light in working order? If you have a sailboat, make sure the mast light is checked as well.
Do you have an up to date registration on board with you? Inspect the craft’s registration numbers to see any been damaged or peeled off during the winter months. This is also a great time to inspect your life vests to make sure they are in good working condition and meet the US Coast Guard requirements.
Not all vessels are required to carry a marine grade type B fire extinguisher on board, but if you are using a motor boat of any kind, it is always a good idea to have one on board. Check to make sure that it is charged and in an easy access spot on your boat or PWC. Inspect your flares or visual distress signals and sound producing devices at this time as well. Power boats 16 feet and longer are required to have a sound producing device (air horn, whistle etc.) that can be sounded for two second blasts and be heard at least ½ mile away. Flares work for both night and daytime distress signals but can be damaged by water or passed their expiration date.
Get out there and enjoy all Northern Michigan lakes have to offer and be safe. I hope to see you out on the lake this summer. Happy Boating!
